The vine is characterized by the presence of spirals in its branches and its large, heart-shaped leaves.
According to Greek mythology, Staphylos was the son of Dionysus and Ariadne. In another myth, Staphylos was a shepherd of the king of Aetolia, Oeneas. As he was tending his goats, he noticed that one of them kept eating a certain fruit and became fatter than the others. He then collected several and offered them to his king. He prepared a juice which he called “wine”, and to the fruit he gave the name of his shepherd (grape).
